well one of the key elements is to make sure that u can side slip. once u get that down which im sure u already have, the next step is trying J-Turns. l reccomend that u start with ur heel side first. if u r a regular footded snowboarder u will be turning to skiers left, if u ride goofy or unnatural u r turning to skiers right. now the KEY element to turning ur snowboard is where ur weight is. ur weight needs to be on ur front foot about 60 on ur frint foot & 40 on ur back foot. this is important because the curvature & the flexability of ur board allows the board to turn itself. but it ur weight is on ur back foot the nose of the board will lift off the snow & u will not be able to turn. we actually turn with the front end of our board the widest part, so thats why we need to keep our weight on our front foot. now once u got that down we need to turn our head shoulders & hips to the direction of ur heels, & at the same time lifting ur toes off the ground, & sinking ur but low. this will turn u to the direction of ur heels & slow u down. now its basically the same process for a toeside turn, but u need to rotate to the direction of ur toes & pick up ur heels. heel side is harder to learn for most people because they cant get over the fear of falling backwards. it just takes time & practice. u might ask why l kno this well that because iv been a snowboard instructor for 5 years. if u have anymore questions or want me to explain something else just send me an email.

When you say once a year, do you mean one day or one week? Unfortunately, if it is one day you're probably not gonna improve much from one year to another. Just like anything else in life, you get better when you do it over and over. If it is a week a year, you should start your week with a lesson and listen to your instructor, not someone on telling you how to snowboard....Good Luck
