Colorado has some of the best skiing/snowboarding in the US. There are also TONS of places to choose from. l would recommend Breck or Winter Park. Also, go with snowboarding!

Colorado or Utah. New Mexico isnt that great. Utah is airport is closer to the resorts & u have about 20 to choice from in about 30 miles. Plus it was the host of the winter olympics. Utah ski resorts r much cheaper then colorado is for the most part. They r basically on the same mountain range just different sides.
If u r in a budget Utah will be cheaper then colorado. If u have all the money in the world. Colorado has some great resorts. But long lines. Ive skiied & boarded them both. But l would take Utah anyday for price ect.
The US SK l team trains in Utah not Colorado, that might tell u something. They r based in Park City, Utah.
And snowboarding is harder then skiing for the first 2 days. After that its tons easier. Ive been boarding for over 20 years. Damn im old.
Have fun & break a leg. Oh bad analogy. *smile*
*** UPDATE ***
This is just an update if december is hit or miss. ''Americas Open'' is always in Utah. Its the first ski competition of the year. Its in Novermber. December is not hit or miss in Utah, many times resorts open before halloween, but almost all of them no matter what r open by thanksgiving. The other person said they had a record year of 221'' of snow. Woo hoo. Alta (utah resort) got over 700 inches. And snowbird is still open & its almost june. They still have 10 feet of snow. And its only about a 20-30 minute drive from the airport. Thats how close it is. You can stay downtown for cheap in a motel 6 or whatever & a bus goes up all day long. Check out these sites. l love Alta its right next to snowbird. But they dont allow boarding. If u r learning it doesnt matter, there r plenty of cheaper places like the other person mentioned brighton. But if u know what u r doing u can take the snowbird tram & ski down all of altas runs. You just cant get on their lifts. But u can board or ski all the way back to snowbird. Take the tram & play all day on altas runs using snowbirds tram.

Utah has the best snow & you save money on transportation to the mountains from the airport b/c the airport is near the resort. Do not get me wrong. l love Colorado & Taos ( l used to live in Breckenridge & my cousins live in Taos) but Utah would suit most people the best.

December is a rough month. It is hit or miss regarding snow. You want to go somewhere that has good snowmaking & will most likely be cold enough to make snow. l recomend hitting the east coast: Sunday River is a snow making beast.in Dec 2006, when all the other ski resorts were too warm to make snow, they had the guns a blazing. There were quite a few races moved to the River that winter (until we got pounded in late Feb). Last winter was unbelivable: 210 a record. l ran into quite a few folks from Texas, New Orleans, Florida, Oklahoma.all of them said they preferred Sunday river to skiing in Colorado, as the crowds were far less & they knew they'd have snow to ski on.
So long as u avoid the holidays, it can be quite reasonable to ski there, especially mid week: they ran $59 pp (double occupancy) ski & stay packages mid week. Who knows what the price will be next season (everything is shooting up!)
Other alternatives: Jay in Vermont, Sugarloaf in Maine, l personally hate Killington, but if u do not mind the attitude, K-mart might work as well.
Just a thought.

Go to Utah they have the best snow on earth! l like Brighton it is pretty cheap. If you are on a huge budget go to wolf mountain its like 30 bucks a day! But colorado is good to.
